Late Return Policy

Last updated: August 23, 2026

1. Two hours of grace

Traffic happens. A vehicle returned within two hours of the scheduled return time is not treated as late and costs nothing extra. Tell us if you are running behind — a message before the return time is almost always the difference between an adjustment and a fee.

2. After two hours — $25 per hour

Beyond the two-hour grace period, a late return fee of $25 per hour applies, counted from the scheduled return time and rounded up to the next whole hour. The fee is capped at one full day of the trip's average rate; past that point the return is treated as an additional rental day and charged at the daily rate for each day the vehicle is held.

3. Why it matters more than the money

A late return is rarely just late. The vehicle is usually booked to somebody else the same day, and every hour it is not back is an hour that renter waits, or a booking we have to cancel — for which the host pays a cancellation fee and the next renter is entitled to a full refund. The fee exists to make the cost visible, not to profit from it.

4. Extending instead

If you know before the return time that you need the vehicle longer, request a date change from your trip page instead of returning late. There is no fee for changing dates, subject to the vehicle being free and to confirmation — see the Cancellation Policy, section 4. A change requested and confirmed costs the difference in rate; a late return costs the fee.

5. Failing to return the vehicle

A vehicle not returned within 24 hours of the scheduled return time, with no contact from the renter and no response to ours, is reported to law enforcement as an unauthorised taking, and the security deposit is charged in full toward recovery costs. This is a step we would very much rather not take, and a single message avoids it.
