LegalTrip Insurance Plan — Coverage Details

Trip Insurance Plan — Coverage Details

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Overview

Our Trip Insurance Plan is an episodic auto protection package underwritten by Mobilitas and Lloyd's of London, offered in partnership with Wheelbase / Outdoorsy. Coverage activates at the formal Key Exchange (start of trip) and ends when the vehicle is returned. You can decline this plan and use your own personal auto insurance instead — both options are presented at checkout.

Auto Basic vs. Auto Essential — tier comparison

Two protection tiers are available at checkout. Auto Essential carries the lower $1,000 deductible (premium tier). Auto Basic carries the $2,500 deductible (entry tier). Both packages include up to $1,000,000 in third-party liability protection for the host and state statutory minimum liability for the guest. Physical damage coverage extends up to the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle, capped at $150,000. Vehicles with an ACV above $150,000 are not eligible; vehicles from exotic brands with ACV above $100,000 are also not eligible.

How coverage applies — primary vs. excess

For Auto rentals: Auto Physical Damage is PRIMARY — Outdoorsy / Mobilitas pays first when the vehicle itself is damaged. Liability coverage is EXCESS — the renter's personal auto insurance applies first for third-party injuries or property damage; the Trip Insurance Plan's liability coverage applies above the personal policy limits, or moves to primary if the renter has no personal policy. Renters must present a valid personal auto insurance card at Key Exchange.

Vehicle eligibility

To qualify for Auto Basic or Auto Essential protection, a vehicle must be 12 model years old or newer, have fewer than 200,000 miles, hold a non-salvage / non-branded / non-written-off title, and have an ACV under $150,000 ($100,000 cap for exotic brands: Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, De Tomaso, Ferrari, Hennessey, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, McLaren, Pantera, Pininfarina, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Saleen, Shelby, Spyker, TVR, Vector). Exotic vehicles undergo manual underwriting review (~24 hours) before approval. The underwriter's published listing criteria on Outdoorsy.com (less than 13 years old, less than 130,000 miles) may apply for bookings originating from the Outdoorsy marketplace specifically — Wheelbase direct bookings on gmotionrentals.com use the broader criteria above. Auto rentals are NOT available for vehicles registered in New York state; only RV rentals are supported there (separate New York coverage rules apply).

Driver eligibility

All drivers covered under the Trip Insurance Plan must: (a) be at least 25 years old; (b) hold a valid, non-temporary driver's license (non-U.S. licenses require a passport and an International Driving Permit (IDP) if not in English); (c) have at least two years of licensed driving experience; (d) have no major driving violations in the past three years (suspended/expired license, reckless driving, speed contests); (e) have no alcohol- or drug-related driving offenses in the past seven years; (f) have no more than two violations or accidents combined in the past three years; (g) complete Outdoorsy's driver verification to be designated a Verified Driver; (h) possess a mobile phone in their own name verifiable by text message. Drivers aged 21–24 are not covered under Wheelbase insurance but may rent using their own insurance plus Roamly Rental Shield (subject to underwriter approval).

Territory of coverage

U.S. Comprehensive and Collision coverage applies to U.S.-registered vehicles for losses that occur in the United States. Coverage is VOID for the entire booking period if the vehicle enters or attempts to enter Canada or Mexico. Cross-state travel within the U.S. is permitted.

What's covered

Collision (impact with another vehicle, object, or upset/rollover); comprehensive losses including theft and larceny, vandalism, fires, hailstorms, windstorms, falling objects (fallen trees, etc.), water and flood, contact with birds or animals, earthquakes, and explosions. Minor windshield chips (1–2 chips, not in the field of vision, caused by a collision or comprehensive event) are repaired with NO deductible. All covered damages are subject to investigation by the claims administrator.

Rideshare use (Uber, Lyft)

Wheelbase Auto Basic and Auto Essential coverage extends to Transportation Network Company (TNC) rideshare use — specifically Uber and Lyft — during 'Period 1' (the rideshare app's primary insurance applies during Periods 2 and 3). Delivery and gig work (DoorDash, Amazon Flex, Uber Eats, Instacart, etc.) is NOT covered under our Trip Insurance Plan. If a renter intends to use the vehicle for delivery gigs, their personal auto policy must explicitly include rideshare/delivery endorsements, otherwise no coverage applies.

What's NOT covered

Coverage will be denied for: vehicles without a clean title (salvage, branded, written-off); driver operating under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or impairing medications; intentional damage; off-road use; racing or speed contests; damage to optional add-ons or personal property (e.g., bicycle racks, portable equipment); mechanical or electrical breakdown; normal wear and tear (scratches/dents ≤4 inches, tire sidewall wear, brake/engine/transmission wear over time); cracks from neglected chips that worsened over successive trips; weather stripping deterioration; peeling window tint; manufacturer / repair defects; war, riot, terrorism, biological / chemical / nuclear contamination; damage to non-essential electronic accessories (sound, visual systems); damage by guest's pets or livestock; vehicles entering Mexico; theft or vandalism without a police report; non-factory aftermarket installations; any damage during operation by an unverified driver or in violation of the rental agreement, Outdoorsy's Terms of Service, or applicable law.

Deductibles — flat per-tier amounts

Per-loss deductibles are tier-based (not vehicle-value-based): Auto Essential = $1,000 deductible per loss; Auto Basic = $2,500 deductible per loss. The deductible applies on a per-loss basis — two separate incidents result in two separate deductibles. The deductible is the guest's responsibility regardless of fault. If we are unable to collect the deductible from the guest, claims are paid net of the deductible and the guest remains fully liable to G Motion Rentals Inc for the outstanding amount.

Windshield damage coverage

Minor windshield chips or cracks that can be repaired (not requiring full replacement) are covered with NO deductible when caused by a collision or comprehensive event. A full windshield replacement is subject to the tier deductible ($1,000 or $2,500). NOT covered: cracks from neglected chips that worsened over time; weather stripping aging; window tint peeling or nicks; flexing or bracing of windshield moldings; damage not caused by a collision or comprehensive event. File windshield claims through the host dashboard reservation page.

Pre-trip and post-trip inspection

Coverage is contingent on a thorough vehicle inspection at both Key Exchange (pickup) and return. G Motion Rentals Inc captures dated photos with EXIF data within 24 hours before departure and within 48 hours after return — including all four exterior corners, front, rear, roof, undercarriage, dashboard, odometer, fuel level, and interior. The renter is required to participate in the inspection at both ends and acknowledge any pre-existing damage on the rental agreement.

Filing a claim

G Motion Rentals Inc files the claim through the Wheelbase host dashboard within 14 days of trip return. The renter must report damage within 48 hours of occurrence and provide: (a) a written statement of the incident; (b) a copy of their personal insurance card; (c) photos / videos of damage; (d) a police report if the loss involves theft, vandalism, suspected criminal conduct, or third parties; (e) contact information for any witnesses or other involved parties. A claims representative from Mobilitas / Outdoorsy contacts both parties within 1 business day. Track status at outdoorsy.com/claims/status. Email: claims@outdoorsy.com. Phone: 855-441-2006 (Mon–Fri, 9 AM – 4:30 PM Central).

Prohibited uses (additional)

The Trip Insurance Plan is void if the vehicle is: (a) driven outside the United States and Canada — Mexico is strictly prohibited; (b) taken to an unauthorized festival event (the list, which currently includes Burning Man in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, is displayed in the Wheelbase checkout flow); (c) used for towing or pushing of any item not expressly authorized by the host; (d) operated while the driver is sending or receiving text messages or emails; (e) operated when overloaded beyond the manufacturer's specifications; (f) operated by anyone using the vehicle in furtherance of an illegal purpose other than a minor traffic citation; (g) operated under or through a structure with insufficient clearance; (h) carrying dangerous, hazardous, or illegal materials; (i) used to transport an animal (other than a service animal) without the host's consent; or (j) smoked in without the host's consent.

Total loss and actual cash value (ACV)

In the event the vehicle is declared a total loss during a covered rental, the underwriter pays the lesser of: (a) the vehicle's ACV, or (b) the cost to repair or replace with property of like kind and quality. The maximum ACV payout for Auto rentals is $150,000. ACV is determined by establishing a baseline from comparable vehicles in the local market, then adjusted for the specific vehicle's pre-loss condition, mileage, and any customizations. If the vehicle has a lienholder, the underwriter pays the lienholder first; surplus (if any) goes to the host. Vehicles with a salvage title are not insurable.

International drivers

International drivers may be covered under Auto Basic and Auto Essential, but automated verification often fails for non-US/Canadian licenses, so G Motion Rentals Inc manually verifies: (a) the driver is 25+ years old; (b) the foreign license is valid and not expired; (c) the photo on the license matches the renter; (d) if the license is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is presented alongside it. License photos and IDP are uploaded to the reservation's Documents section. State law may limit how long visitors may drive on a foreign license (typically 30–90 days).

Vehicle theft, missing, or abandonment

If the vehicle is stolen, abandoned, or not returned during the rental period, G Motion Rentals Inc will immediately contact the Outdoorsy claims administrator and the police as instructed. If a guest fails to return the vehicle within 24 hours of receiving instructions, the vehicle may be reported as stolen — exposing the guest to arrest and civil/criminal penalties. A $500 case administration fee applies if the vehicle has to be reported stolen due to non-return. Damage occurring before final inspection at return is the guest's responsibility. Towing and private investigation costs to recover an unreturned vehicle are the guest's responsibility.

Limits and exclusions on payouts

If the claim is approved, the guest's liability for damages cannot exceed the applicable deductible ($1,000 or $2,500). However, if the guest violates Outdoorsy's Terms of Service or any provision of the Protection Package, the guest may be liable for the full amount of the loss regardless of deductible. The protection plan does NOT cover: loss of use, lost revenue, business interruption, diminished value, transportation/towing to non-nearest facilities, alternative accommodation, or interior damage of a non-collision nature.

Cancelling or modifying the Trip Insurance Plan

The Trip Insurance Plan is selected at checkout and cannot be added retroactively after the trip has started. To switch between the Trip Insurance Plan and your own personal insurance, cancel the booking before pickup and re-book with the desired option. The standard cancellation policy applies (see Terms of Service).

Personal Insurance Verification (Axle) — how it works

If you decline the Trip Insurance Plan and use your own personal auto insurance, Wheelbase's partner Axle automatically verifies four specific requirements: (1) the policy is active, (2) the policy is active during your specific reservation dates, (3) the policy includes collision coverage for rental vehicles, and (4) the name on the policy matches the renter. A $3.00 verification fee applies (deducted from the host payout). To complete verification, you must click the 'Verify Insurance' button on your confirmation page and SIGN INTO your insurance provider's portal (e.g., State Farm, Geico, Progressive) — uploading a photo of an insurance card is not sufficient. Possible results: 'Completed' (all 4 requirements met), 'Under Review' (insufficient info / name mismatch — host will manually verify), or 'Does Not Meet Requirement' (failed one or more checks). Axle does NOT verify rideshare or delivery endorsements — if you intend to use the vehicle for Uber/Lyft or any gig work and rely on your personal policy, you must contact your insurer directly to confirm coverage extends to rented vehicles used for those purposes.

Roamly Rental Shield (RRS) — alternative coverage

Roamly Rental Shield (RRS) is a supplemental physical damage product offered to renters who use their own personal auto insurance but want extra protection for the rental vehicle. RRS is NOT insurance — it does NOT cover third-party liability (damage to other vehicles or people). You as the renter must maintain active personal liability insurance separately.

Roamly Rental Shield — eligibility and pricing

RRS eligibility requirements: (a) vehicle Actual Cash Value of $50,000 or less; (b) trip duration of 45 days or less; (c) renter at least 21 years old (vs. 25+ for Wheelbase Auto Basic/Essential). Pricing: $10.50 per day in most states; $13.33 per day in Hawaii. Important: RRS is charged on a per-CALENDAR-day basis, so a one-day rental is billed for two days of coverage. RRS must be added at least 24 hours before the trip start — it cannot be added to same-day bookings. If you need to extend an RRS-protected trip, the current booking must be closed and a new booking with RRS created (start +1 day); RRS-protected bookings cannot be extended in place.

Roamly Rental Shield — coverage and claims

RRS coverage limits: Rental Collision damage up to $50,000 (or vehicle's ACV, whichever is lower); $0 deductible for the renter; Roadside Assistance up to $700 (flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery); Medical Evacuation up to $5,000 (medical escort, hospital transport, repatriation). Claims are handled directly by Wheelbase's partner International Medical Group (IMG): support line 1-317-655-9798. Renters who purchase RRS receive a confirmation email from IMG with a Membership ID once the booking is confirmed.

Arbitration, governing law, and disputes

By selecting the Trip Insurance Plan at checkout, you agree to Outdoorsy's binding arbitration clause: most disputes between you and Outdoorsy will be resolved through individual, binding arbitration (not court or class action) unless you opt out within 30 days. Before initiating arbitration, both parties must engage in 45 days of good-faith informal dispute resolution (notify Outdoorsy by emailing disputes@outdoorsy.com). To OPT OUT of the arbitration agreement, email arbitrationoptout@outdoorsy.com within 30 days of first accepting the terms with: your full name, address, email associated with your Outdoorsy Account, and an unequivocal statement that you want to opt out. Disputes between guests and hosts (not involving Outdoorsy) under $2,500 may be brought in small claims court. The Outdoorsy Terms of Service are governed by Texas law; any non-arbitrated claim must be filed in state or federal court in Travis County, Austin, Texas. All claims must be commenced within one (1) year after the cause of action accrues.

Outdoorsy Terms of Service incorporation

When you select the Trip Insurance Plan at checkout, you also agree to the Outdoorsy Terms of Service (last revised April 11, 2026), the Auto Protection Package Terms of Service (effective April 11, 2026), and Outdoorsy's Cancellation and Privacy policies. These documents are presented in full on checkout.wheelbasepro.com and supersede any conflicting language on this page. Liability limitations include: $5,500 liquidated damages for serious breaches (e.g., unauthorized off-platform bookings, falsifying vehicle information); a $200 administrative charge if a host attempts to circumvent platform fees; $500 stolen-vehicle administrative fee if a guest fails to return. Reviews of trips may be left within 14 days after booking completion.
